A row of blanks, a category and six chances. Hangman is the word game every classroom and every long car journey has played, and it still works because it mixes two good things: vocabulary and bluffing.

How to play

One player, the setter, secretly chooses a word.
The guesser sees a blank for every letter and the word’s category.
The guesser picks one letter at a time.
If the letter is in the word, every place it appears is filled in.
If it is not, one more part of the figure is drawn. Six wrong letters and the round is lost.
Fill in the whole word before the sixth miss to win.

How it works in GroupGames.ai

Tips: best letters to guess in Hangman

Start with the most common letters. In English, the most common letters run roughly E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, R. Vowels reveal a word’s shape fast.

Use the category. Knowing it is an animal or a food cuts the possibilities hugely.

Look for common endings. Patterns like -ING, -ER and -LE show up often.

For setters, short words with rare letters are hardest. Words like JAZZ, FIZZ and BUZZ are famously tough because they use few common letters.

Ways to play

Family night. A parent and a child can take on another pair. Swap setter and guesser each round so everyone gets a turn at both.

Spelling practice. Children learn letter patterns fast when they have to guess them. Talk through why a letter might fit before tapping it.

Crew challenge. Play a five round match while the rest of the crew watches and cheers every correct letter.

Common mistakes

Guessing rare letters too soon. Save Q, Z and X for when the word’s shape suggests them.
Forgetting the category. It is the best clue you have. Think of every word in it that fits the blanks.
Ignoring double letters. Words like BALLOON and COFFEE hide repeats. One correct guess can fill several blanks.

A short history

Nobody knows exactly where Hangman began. A version called Birds, Beasts and Fishes appears in Alice Gomme’s 1894 collection of traditional children’s games, where players guessed the name of an animal from its first and last letters. A version with the drawing, much like the one we know, was described in an American newspaper in 1902. Television’s Wheel of Fortune was inspired by it, and today it is a classroom favourite for spelling practice. Many families now draw a flower losing its petals or a snowman melting instead of the traditional picture.
